With Brexit on the horizon, more than three million EU citizens face increased uncertainty around their right to live and work in the UK. In 2018, the UK government published plans requiring EU citizens who wanted to stay in the UK to apply for ‘settled status’ to allow them to remain after Brexit.

The EU Settlement Scheme opened fully on 30 March 2019. The deadline for making an application to remain in the UK is currently 31 December 2020. This guide explains the process of how EU nationals can apply for settled status, based on the latest government announcements.
