Neil Baines is a specialist asbestos solicitor based in Thompsons' Nottingham office where he is regional head of the specialist asbestos team. Neil has experience of dealing with asbestos compensation claims for all types of asbestos-related diseases, including pleural thickening, asbestosis, asbestos-related lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Neil represents clients from throughout the East Midlands and East Anglia who have been injured by asbestos and also frequently works for the families of victims of asbestos who have sadly died of their illnesses.

Neil also works closely with local asbestos support groups such as the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team and Asbestos Support West Midlands. He always strives to recover the maximum amount of compensation for his clients in the shortest possible time.

 

Neil's case experience

  • In January 2023 recovered compensation of £1,000,000 on behalf of the widow of a 52-year-old self-employed builder who was exposed to asbestos dust whilst working as an apprentice carpenter in the mid to late 1980s.
  • Secured an award of £650,000 (RPI £939,000) at an Assessment of Damages Hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice for the family of a 56-year-old woman who contracted mesothelioma from washing her husband’s asbestos contaminated work clothes.
  • Acted on behalf of the Claimant in Smith v W Ford & Sons (Contractors) Limited [2021] EWHC 1749 (QB) the leading authority on the convention that costs budgeting is generally disapplied in the Asbestos List.
  • In March 2014 secured compensation of £210,000 on behalf of a 70-year-old retired science teacher who was exposed to asbestos dust whilst working at a CLASP built school in the early 1970s and at a second school when some asbestos ceiling tiles in her classroom were disturbed during building works.
  • At a joint settlement meeting on December 2018 recovered £700,000 compensation on behalf of the family of a 70-year-old gentleman who died from mesothelioma having been exposed to asbestos dust in the early 1960s at two power stations whilst working for the CEGB. The deceased had been the main carer for his wife, who was suffering from dementia.
  • At a joint settlement meeting in October 2023, recovered £575,000.00 compensation for the family of a 63 year gentleman who died of mesothelioma. The deceased was exposed to asbestos dust in the early 1980’s whilst working as a labourer when he assisted in the demolition of an old tannery. The deceased had been the main carer for his 67-year-old disabled wife.
