A retired Swansea nurse who dedicated her working life to caring for NHS patients is appealing for information after being diagnosed with the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
The woman, now in her late 80s, spent her entire nursing career working for the NHS, first at Swansea General Hospital and later at Singleton Hospital.Â
In January 2026, she became unwell and, following medical investigations, was devastated to learn she had developed mesothelioma, an incurable cancer of the lining of the lung caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos. The disease can take decades to develop following exposure.Â
During her years working at Singleton Hospital, she recalls asbestos removal work taking place in the old casualty department during the 1990s. Like many NHS employees of her generation, she never imagined that simply carrying out her job could one day put her health at risk.Â
She is now seeking information from former colleagues, contractors, tradespeople and anyone else who worked at Singleton Hospital and may remember asbestos removal, refurbishment or construction works, particularly in or around the casualty and outpatient departments.Â
Thompsons Solicitors, which is representing the former nurse and has acted for a number of men who carried out construction work at Singleton Hospital and who have subsequently been diagnosed with asbestos-related conditions over the years, is now appealing for anyone who may be able to assist to come forward.Â
Amanda Jones, Head of Asbestos at Thompsons Solicitors, said:Â "Our client dedicated her entire working life to caring for others through the NHS and her mesothelioma diagnosis has come as a devastating shock.Â
"Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, often many decades before symptoms appear. Hospitals built before the use of asbestos was banned frequently contained asbestos materials, and exposure could occur during maintenance, refurbishment or removal works.Â
"We are keen to hear from anyone who can provide information about building works, refurbishment projects or asbestos removal activities at the hospital in the 80s and 90s.Â
"Even the smallest detail or recollection could prove important and help provide answers for our client and her family at this extremely difficult time."Â
Anyone who may be able to assist is asked to contact Amanda Jones, Head of Asbestos at Thompsons Solicitors, on 01554 779940 or by email at AmandaJones@thompsons.law.Â
Anyone who believes they may have information that could assist is encouraged to get in touch.Â
