The family of a former confectioner are trying to trace her former colleagues after she died from an asbestos-related disease.

Kathleen Libers, nee Steel, died, aged 85, in October 2008 of the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma.

She left behind her husband, John, son David and two grandchildren.

Mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos

Kathleen was originally from Barrow in Furness but lived in Leeds before she died. She was diagnosed with mesothelioma in July 2008 after complaining of breathlessness.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. Many sufferers were exposed to the dust in the workplace.

Kathleen’s son, David, instructed asbestos claims experts Thompsons Solicitors for advice about claiming compensation.

Did you work at the Co-operative Bake House in Barrow?

The family wish to hear from anyone who may know more about the working conditions when Kathleen worked in the Co-operative Bake House in Barrow between 1938 to 1964.

Kathleen joined the Co-op at just 15 and was employed as an apprentice confectioner.

Thompsons are interested in particular about any information anyone may have on working conditions and the work equipment.

David said: “All the family are devastated that my mum suffered such a painful illness and has been taken away from us before her time. It is all the more distressing knowing that she probably developed the disease because of her work.

“It is important to all of us, but to my dad in particular, to find out more about how she came into contact with asbestos.”
