On Tuesday, Baroness Amos published the findings of her national maternity and neonatal inquiry, calling for urgent action to improve safety and outcomes for women, birthing people, babies and families across England.
The report says that the challenge is no longer understanding the problems facing maternity services, but making sure the many recommendations already made are put into practice and lead to lasting change.Â
Baroness Amos sets out eight recommendations, including the creation of a statutory Maternity and Neonatal Commissioner, stronger leadership and accountability, better support for staff, action to tackle inequalities, and investment in the workforce, systems and infrastructure needed to deliver safe care.Â
Thompsons Solicitors, which represents families affected by avoidable maternity harm, welcomed the report and said it must now mark the point where years of recommendations are finally turned into action.Â
Commenting on the report, Victoria Gofton, Head of Clinical Negligence at Thompsons Solicitors, said: “We welcome Baroness Amos's report. It is another important reminder of the changes needed to improve maternity care. But after years of inquiries, reviews and recommendations, the time for identifying the problems has passed. What we need now is a properly funded plan, clear accountability and action that delivers lasting change.Â
"Families have seen too many reports highlighting the same failings. They deserve to know that this time things will be different.Â
"We know what the problems are. The challenge now is making sure the recommendations already made are put into practice and that improvements last.Â
"This report must be the point where maternity care moves from identifying problems to delivering solutions. That means proper investment, clear accountability and a commitment to see these changes through. Women, birthing people, babies, families and staff deserve nothing less."Â
