A Unite member who suffered multiple fractures to his right leg and ankle after slipping on a worn driveway surface is raising awareness of the legal and rehabilitation support available to injured workers.
In October 2023 Mr David Lovelidge, 64, from Southwick, West Sussex, was working as a carer for Agincare, when he visited a resident at Furze Hill Court, a private block of flats in Hove. As he exited the building, he slipped on a hazardous driveway surface, sustaining serious injuries.
His physically demanding role involved assisting elderly and vulnerable clients with mobility and personal care, but due to the severity of his injuries, he has been unable to work since the fall and has relied on his partner for daily support.

His injuries required major surgery, including open reduction and internal fixation, and he later developed a frozen shoulder from prolonged crutch use. The accident significantly affected his independence and financial stability.
Following the incident, Mr Lovelidge instructed personal injury lawyers at Thompsons Solicitors through his Unite membership to investigate the circumstances of his fall. His legal team, led by Michelle Blakemore, brought a claim against the owners of the block of flats, alleging that the driveway had not been properly maintained and posed a risk to residents and visitors.
The defendant’s insurer, Zurich, admitted liability during legal proceedings. With support from his legal team and Unite, Mr Lovelidge was able to secure a five-figure compensation package which reflects his loss of earnings, and which allowed him to access specialist rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and personal training, to aid his recovery.
While he is expected to return to work by April 2025, his injuries have had a lasting impact on his ability to perform physical tasks.
Despite the challenges, he is speaking out to encourage others in similar situations to seek expert legal advice and rehabilitation support.
Mr Lovelidge said: "The fall changed my life in an instant. Breaking my leg and shattering my ankle meant two major surgeries, and for months, I was confined to my home. The physical pain was bad enough, but the mental toll of isolation and financial uncertainty was overwhelming.
"At one point I was told there was a risk of amputation, which obviously added to my stress levels, but the support I received from Unite and Thompsons Solicitors was incredible. They didn’t just fight for my legal case—they made sure I got the rehabilitation I needed to regain my strength and independence.
“My work is an important part of my identity, and thanks to them, I’m delighted to say I am on track to return to work.
"I want others to know that help is out there. If you’ve been injured through no fault of your own, don’t suffer in silence—reach out and get the support you deserve."
Michelle Blakemore, personal injury lawyer at Thompsons Solicitors, added: "This case highlights the serious consequences of unsafe premises, particularly for those in physically demanding jobs. Through his Unite membership, our client was able to access expert legal advice and the rehabilitation he needed to help him rebuild his life.
"We are proud to have helped him secure justice and the support he needed. His determination has been inspiring, and we wish him the very best as he continues his recovery and prepares to return to work."
Stephen Pinder, Unite Legal Director, said: "This case highlights the importance of the Unite legal service, and how our members are able to rely upon the service when they need it most. Sadly, many of our members are injured in the course of their work, and I am pleased that this successful outcome was achieved."
