Chris Hurd, 37, from Basingstoke, sustained severe and life-changing injuries in the 2024 collision, when a van reportedly drove through a red light and collided with the taxi in which he was travelling. The impact sent the vehicle spinning, causing further injuries to a cyclist and a pedestrian.

Chris was knocked unconscious and later woke in hospital in Hungary with multiple fractures to his neck and spine, devastating eye injuries, facial paralysis and permanent scarring. Doctors warned he was likely to lose his eye altogether.

Since the collision, he has undergone eight complex surgeries which restored partial sight. However, he continues to live with chronic pain, lasting physical injuries and significant changes to his independence and day-to-day life.

Now, more than two years on from the collision, which happened on May 30th, 2024, Chris has instructed Thompsons Solicitors to pursue legal action against the insurers of the drivers involved, seeking accountability and support for his ongoing recovery and future needs.

Speaking as part of Injury Awareness Week (22–26 June), a national campaign led by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) to raise awareness of the devastating impact injuries caused by negligence can have on victims and those around them, Chris is sharing his story to highlight the long-term realities of life after serious injury.

He describes how the collision has affected his ability to work, drive and enjoy many of the activities he once took for granted, while routine day-to-day tasks remain a challenge as he continues his rehabilitation and recovery.

He said: “The crash changed my life in an instant. I went from being independent and active to facing years of surgeries, rehabilitation and uncertainty about what my future would look like.

“I was told I would likely lose my eye completely, and there were times when I didn’t know how much of my life, I would be able to get back.

“Although I’m grateful for the treatment and progress I’ve made, I’m still living with the consequences every day. Things many people take for granted - work, driving, sport and everyday independence - have all been affected, and my recovery is far from over.”

James Riley, Head of the Cross Border Personal Injury Team at Thompsons Solicitors, said: “Chris has suffered devastating and life-changing injuries in circumstances that should never have occurred.

“While his focus remains on rehabilitation and rebuilding his life, we are pursuing legal action to secure accountability and ensure he has access to the support he needs now and in the future.

“The legal process is ongoing, and we will continue to support Chris as he seeks justice following this collision.”

Chris added: “Living with the consequences of these injuries has been incredibly difficult, but I’m determined to remain positive and keep moving forward.

“Pursuing legal action is about making sure I have access to the support, rehabilitation and financial security I may need in the future as I continue rebuilding my life and adapting to the long-term effects of my injuries.”
