Expanded Investigation into Yaser Jabbar
Recent revelations have intensified concerns surrounding Yaser Jabbar, a former consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH). According to the The Sunday Times, a leaked internal review has uncovered that 721 children who underwent treatment by Mr. Jabbar are now subject to an urgent investigation.
According to the Sunday Times, this investigation, led by five expert surgeons, has already reviewed 37 cases and found that 22 children experienced harm—13 of whom suffered “severe harm,” including lifelong injuries, amputations, and other serious complications.
The Extent of the Harm
The Times reports that Mr. Jabbar’s limb-lengthening procedures, which involved the use of Ilizarov frames—a device designed to stretch bones gradually—have led to catastrophic outcomes for many patients. Some children are living with different leg lengths, up to 20cm in discrepancy, while others suffer from chronic pain, muscle damage, nerve injuries, and permanent deformities. Disturbingly, it is alleged that at least one child has had a leg amputated due to complications from these surgeries, another child is at risk of amputation if corrective surgery does not succeed.
The Sunday Times has reported that the Royal College of Surgeons’ investigation, conducted at the request of GOSH, has revealed severe failings not only in Mr. Jabbar’s practice but also in the hospital’s overall culture and approach to patient safety. The report found that Mr Jabbar carried out operations that were “incorrect and unsuitable,” demonstrating “a lack of understanding of the principles of deformity correction surgery” and “a lack of insight.” The review also highlighted instances where operations were performed without proper consent and procedures that provided no clear benefits or justification.
Hospital Response and Accountability Concerns
Great Ormond Street Hospital has acknowledged the findings and apologised to affected patients and their families. However, serious questions remain about the hospital’s management and response to earlier whistleblower reports, which, according to staff, date back to 2017—shortly after Mr Jabbar began his tenure.
Despite these warnings, it is reported that the action was delayed, allowing Mr Jabbar to continue practising until September 2023, when he left the hospital following an 11-month sabbatical on full pay.
The hospital is now conducting a comprehensive review of all patients treated by Mr. Jabbar, which is expected to take another 18 months. Meanwhile, Mr Jabbar has relinquished his license to practice in the UK but continues to perform surgeries abroad, which has left many families feeling distressed and betrayed.
Our Commitment to Affected Families
Thompsons Solicitors is deeply concerned about the extent of the harm caused by Mr. Jabbar’s actions and the apparent systemic failures at GOSH that allowed this to continue. Our dedicated team of clinical negligence lawyers is investigating these matters rigorously to ensure that every affected family has the opportunity to seek justice.
Linda Millband from Thompsons Solicitors, who represents hundreds of patients harmed by rogue surgeons, said:
“The recent report in the Sunday Times regarding the investigation at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is shocking and profoundly concerning. Families who trusted the hospital and Mr Jabbar appear to have been betrayed.
“We are dedicated to helping parents find the answers to their urgent questions about this surgeon and holding those responsible accountable. The children and their families affected by these actions deserve justice and full compensation.”
