Mesh Surgery Case
Our client, Avril, underwent mesh surgery performed in 2013 to correct a bowel prolapse. The surgery was performed by Mr Anthony Dixon.
However, six weeks after the initial procedure Avril experienced excruciating pain and sickness. She was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, where a scan revealed that mesh had become wrapped around her bowel, leading to emergency surgery which saw 15cm of her bowel removed.
Almost five years on, the 41-year-old mother is still suffering from serious health complications that affect all aspects of her life: she cannot plan days out with her young family because the symptoms of her mesh injury are so unpredictable.
After hearing about the support Thompsons Solicitors offers to individuals affected by mesh surgery in Bristol on a BBC Inside Out West documentary, Avril instructed our medical negligence specialists to pursue a claim on her behalf.
Avril is one of over 50 former patients of Mr Dixon who are pursuing claims with Thompsons Solicitors against the consultant colorectal surgeon for procedures that have left them in excruciating pain.
Avril said: “Mr Dixon made out the procedure was very simple, I was never made aware of any potential side-effects. I felt like a guinea pig when I found out that a ‘new’ type of mesh had been used on me, I wasn’t even aware that there was more than one type of mesh.
“I would never have agreed to the procedure if I knew what I now know. It is incredibly daunting to think of the medical issues that may still arise in the future. I’m really glad I have an experienced medical negligence firm like Thompsons Solicitors fighting for me and all of the other victims of mesh – not just for our individual cases but to bring an end to mesh usage.”
We are currently representing more than 200 people across the UK who are living with serious health complications due to mesh surgery, and are committed to fighting for anyone who has been affected.
We're campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers of mesh surgery and to call an end to the use of mesh in the UK.
