Despite the ban on asbestos in the UK, asbestos-related disease remains a serious and ongoing risk. Thompsons’ Head of Asbestos, Amanda Jones, recently spoke to BBC Radio Manchester and featured in a BBC News article explaining why the dangers of asbestos are far from a thing of the past.

The coverage followed a case in which a former university worker received a £400k settlement after developing mesothelioma following asbestos exposure during his employment in Manchester.

While many people associate asbestos with historic exposure, it is still present in thousands of buildings across the UK. It can be disturbed during maintenance, refurbishment and demolition work, meaning workers may still be exposed without realising — often decades before symptoms appear.

Amanda told the BBC that there remains a widespread misconception that asbestos is no longer an issue.

“There is a perception that asbestos exposure is something that only happened in the past. Unfortunately, people are still being diagnosed with asbestos-related conditions every week, and exposure can still occur today.”

Thompsons Solicitors has long been at the forefront of asbestos and industrial disease litigation, representing workers and their families and raising awareness of the ongoing risks associated with asbestos exposure.
