A Cullompton-based HGV driver who lost his lower left leg in a workplace incident is sharing his story to inspire others and highlight the importance of strong support networks, especially family, alongside union membership and workplace safety.

Mr Mark Sowden, 56, from Willand, Devon, was struck by a forklift truck while walking through his workplace warehouse on 15 December 2022. The serious injuries he sustained led to the amputation of his leg below the knee.

Now, as an active Unite the Union shop steward and a member of the South West TUC Disabled Members’ Committee, he is using his experience to support his colleagues and advocate for better protections for all workers.

"No one ever expects to go to work and leave with life-changing injuries. Losing the lower part of my left leg was a traumatic and life-altering experience, but I was never alone in this journey.

“The unwavering support of my family through every stage of this ordeal gave me the strength to keep going. They were by my side during the darkest days—encouraging me, helping with everyday tasks, and lifting me emotionally when things felt impossible.

"The wider network around me –my union, my colleagues, my medical and rehabilitation teams, and my legal team – have also helped to give me the tools I needed to rebuild my life.

“If my story can inspire anyone else in a similar situation, then speaking out is worth it."

After the incident, Mr Sowden was airlifted to Derriford Hospital. Surgeons tried to save his foot, but amputation was ultimately necessary. He spent nine days in the hospital before returning home to begin life with a prosthetic limb.

Recovery was a steep climb. With his family’s backing and through his Unite membership, Mr Sowden accessed legal support from Thompsons Solicitors. His legal team, led by Lisa Gunner, pursued a successful claim for compensation against his employer, securing an out-of-court settlement. This has enabled him to access specialist prosthetic treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care.

Since then, he has undergone extensive physiotherapy and prosthetic rehabilitation, gradually regaining mobility and independence. He has also embraced new sports, including kayaking and cycling, to support his physical and mental well-being.

Thanks to his determination and the strength of his support system, he is now preparing to return to work this summer, with reasonable adjustments in place.

“The road hasn’t been easy. My family never let me give up, even when the mental toll was heavy. Injuries like mine don’t just affect the injured—they affect everyone close to them.

“With my family's support, I was able to instruct Thompsons through my union. I accessed the treatment I needed to recover and regain my independence.

“The legal team ensured I received the best possible medical support, prosthetic treatment, and physiotherapy. Without that, I wouldn’t be where I am today—physically stronger, emotionally more resilient, and hopeful for the future.”

Lisa Gunner of Thompsons Solicitors said: “This case highlights the devastating impact of inadequate workplace safety. Employers have a duty to protect workers—and when they fail, lives can change forever.

“While compensation can’t undo the harm, it has enabled Mark to access essential support. His resilience and positive attitude are truly inspiring. His story underlines the importance of having the right team around you when something goes wrong.”

Unite director of legal Stephen Pinder said: “Unite is dedicated to ensuring our members receive first-rate legal cover when the worst happens and they suffer workplace injuries. Mr Sowden’s Unite membership meant he was able to use our legal services entirely free of charge.

“Workplace injuries should be eradicated, as safety must always be paramount. In the meantime, being a Unite member is the best protection workers have.”

Mr Sowden continues to look ahead, campaigning for improved safety standards and disability rights. He remains a committed union member, offering guidance to others and pushing for safer workplaces.

“I’m proud to keep advocating on behalf of the Union. No one should go through what I did. But if they do, they need the right support—family, union, medical, and legal.

“It gives you a voice, a network, and the strength to get justice.”

Mr Sowden’s employer admitted partial liability for the incident. The settlement reflects his injuries, loss of earnings, and ongoing rehabilitation needs.
