The firefighter was working for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service when he was called to an incident on a busy road. After arriving at the scene, he exited the fire engine and began carrying out his duties. As he closed the passenger-side door of the fire engine, a passing HGV collided with the door, crushing his left index finger against the vehicle. The lorry driver failed to stop and left the scene without exchanging details. 

Fortunately, a nearby police officer was able to record the vehicle's registration number, providing a crucial lead in identifying those responsible. 

Severe injury led to amputation 

The firefighter sustained a significant crush injury to his left index finger and underwent surgery, including the insertion of K-wires to try and repair the damage. 

Despite treatment, he experienced almost two years of restricted movement, pain and ongoing discomfort. Ultimately, the damage to the finger was so severe that amputation became necessary. 

Following the amputation, Thompsons arranged for specialist assessment and support through a prosthetics provider. Recommendations included the provision of advanced prosthetic solutions, including a silicone finger prosthesis and an MCP Driver, designed to improve function and help him adapt to daily life. 

He was eventually able to return to his duties as a firefighter.  

Overcoming the challenges of a cross-border claim 

The claim presented several complexities as the HGV was registered and insured in Bulgaria. Our specialist Cross Border Personal Injury team carried out extensive investigations to trace both the haulage company and its insurer, ensuring that the claim could progress despite the driver having left the scene. 

Working closely with specialist counsel, Thompsons prepared detailed evidence regarding the impact of the injury, including the claimant's ongoing symptoms, treatment needs and future losses. 

Following a conference with counsel and the preparation of a comprehensive Schedule of Loss, Thompsons sought to resolve the claim without the need for court proceedings. 

After negotiations, the case settled successfully for a significant sum, securing compensation to help the firefighter move forward following his life-changing injury.
