Mesothelioma

Sunderland Family Thanks Thompsons Solicitors for Helping Secure Justice

The family of a former builders’ yard worker from Sunderland has thanked Thompsons Solicitors for their support in securing justice following his death from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by workplace asbestos exposure.

Mr Leslie Bell worked at Grahams Builders Merchants in Sunderland between 1968 and 1973. During this time, he regularly handled asbestos-containing materials but was not provided with any protective equipment. Decades later, in early 2023, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a devastating illness caused by his occupational exposure.

Sadly, his condition deteriorated quickly, and he passed away in July 2023, aged 70.

Shortly before his passing, Mr Bell sought legal advice from Thompsons Solicitors, where senior lawyer Stuart Latham took on the case. Recognising the urgency of the situation, Stuart acted immediately, taking Mr Bell’s evidence about his asbestos exposure via telephone upon receiving instructions.

Thompsons Solicitors then undertook extensive research to trace the successor company to Grahams Builders Merchants, which had later traded as Graham Moat Ltd, as well as identifying the company’s insurers at the time of Mr Bell’s employment.

The legal team also relied on evidence provided by Mr Bell’s brother, George Bell, who had worked for the same company. This testimony, combined with Mr Bell’s initial statement, led to the defendant admitting liability.

Thompsons successfully secured a six-figure compensation settlement on behalf of Mr Bell’s estate, holding his former employer accountable for the harm caused by their failure to provide a safe working environment.

Mr Bell’s brother, George, said: “Stuart and his team were excellent. They guided us through every stage of the process and were always available to answer our questions. It was a relief to have such professional support during such a difficult time. The settlement ensures my brother’s suffering hasn’t been ignored and that his former employer has been held accountable for failing to protect its workers.”

The settlement reflects the care costs Mr Bell required in his final months and acknowledges the significant impact his illness had on his family. The family hopes that by sharing their experience, they will encourage others affected by asbestos exposure to seek legal advice and hold negligent employers to account.
