Thompsons Solicitors has secured £732,000 for a factory worker whose leg was amputated following a workplace accident

The man was working on a radial arm drill, which drills holes into five-foot wide pieces of metal, when a piece weighing more than 500kg disconnected from its clips, crushing his left leg and foot.

Having been airlifted to hospital, doctors said the damage was so severe that they needed to amputate his leg below the knee. He spent a further two weeks in hospital before returning home.

The severity of the injury means he has been unable to return to work and is looking for alternative work.

The serious injuries team at Thompsons Solicitors has significant experience in dealing with cases where workplace accidents have led to amputation injuries. We were able to secure interim payments for our client as the case was in progress to ensure that he wasn’t left to pay for various treatments or adjustments necessary to improve his quality of life.

Since the accident happened, he has adapted his home so that he can live on the ground floor. He needs regular care to do daily tasks and relies on a prosthetic limb to move around.

He instructed Thompsons Solicitors to investigate a compensation claim who went on to secure a settlement of £732,134, which included interim payments for treatment, house adaptations and prosthetics.

He said: “The accident has changed my life. Everything takes longer to do and I’ve struggled to find a job because I can’t do what I used to. It’s so frustrating to think that better safety precautions could have avoided this. Instead, I’m stuck with the consequences of this injury.

“I would never have had the confidence to make a claim without the support of Thompsons Solicitors. Its support has enabled me to modify my home, get prosthetics and move on as best I can, but things will never be the same.”
