North Bristol NHS Trust has contacted patients who may have been harmed by the care provided by Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Mr John Hutchinson. Thompsons Solicitors is currently representing several of Mr Hutchinson’s former patients.

Concerns about Mr Hutchinson’s care first came to light when Spire Healthcare issued a patient notification in December 2019 and later revoked his practising privileges. Following this, Spire Bristol conducted an internal review, which found that some of Mr Hutchinson's patients had received inappropriate treatment, leading to harm. Spire Bristol has since contacted affected patients to inform them of these findings.

North Bristol NHS Trust also commissioned an external review by the Royal College of Surgeons, which examined Mr Hutchinson's work within its facilities. The Trust is now contacting patients whose cases were reviewed anonymously to share specific details about their care and we are aware that some patients have been told that avoidable harm has been caused to them following treatment provided by Mr Hutchinson.

Concerns have arisen from some of Mr Hutchinson’s former patients who underwent scoliosis correction, fusion surgery, and complex spinal surgery. They assert that some operations were performed at incorrect levels or were more extensive than required, leading to additional pain, suffering, and extended recovery periods.

As the UK's foremost personal injury law firm, Thompsons Solicitors currently represents several of Mr Hutchinson's former patients who have raised concerns about their treatment. These patients have received letters from Spire Hospital or the North Bristol Hospital Trust indicating a review of their care. We encourage anyone who has received such a notification to contact us.
