Dave Fisher has handled personal injury and disease claims for 46 years – during the last 20 of which he has specialised in taking cases on behalf of the victims of asbestosis, other asbestos-related diseases and their families.
Based in Thompsons Solicitors’ Birmingham office, he represents clients from across the West Midlands and eastern England and has been highly successful in resolving even the most complex asbestos-related claims.
One of the most difficult aspects of asbestos disease claims is that the diseases take between ten and 50 years to manifest themselves. In some cases, the employer responsible for the victim’s exposure to asbestos no longer exists and the insurer can be difficult to trace. Dave’s significant experience and expertise has seen him able to win compensation even in such complex cases.
Given Dave’s experience and knowledge, his main responsibility at Thompsons Solicitors is to help and advise colleagues specialising in asbestos disease claims.
He is fully aware of the stress that clients and their families can be under when dealing with news of a fatal illness. He ensures that they feel supported during the legal process and goes out of his way to do so. His ultimate focus is to secure the highest possible financial settlement in the briefest time so that clients can be assured that their families will be looked after following their death.
Dave's case experience
Asbestos disease claim: A policeman was exposed to asbestos during training exercises in derelict buildings. As a result of breaking down doors and using stun grenades, asbestos dust was released. No risk assessments were ever carried out. Dave won a substantial settlement for the officer’s wife, providing her with much needed financial security.
Asbestos disease claim: In another case, a man who had spent his entire working life with British Rail had been negligently exposed to asbestos many times. Dave’s client was never given any warning of the dangers of asbestos exposure, nor was he offered basic protections such as facemasks. After experiencing chest problems and visiting his doctor, the client was diagnosed with mesothelioma and was given less than a year to live. Dave secured compensation for him just six months after he contacted Thompsons Solicitors.
Mesothelioma claim: Another client had been negligently exposed to asbestos by two different employers in his early working life. He was never given any protection from the fibres or told of the dangers. The client was only in his 50s when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma through his contact with asbestos. Doctors tried to extend his life with surgery and chemotherapy but he died only 14 months after being diagnosed. Dave succeeded in recovering £300,000 in damages for him.
Mesothelioma claim: Dave represented a man who had been exposed to asbestos on a daily basis while working for the NHS after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma in his early 60s. Doctors tried to extend his life with surgery and chemotherapy but he died just a year after diagnosis. Dave succeeded in securing £155,000 in damages for the client’s family after taking the case to court.
A Chartered Legal Executive, Dave is a member of Asbestos Support Central England and the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team.

Mrs Lesley Harrington, said: “I was very, very pleased. David was the very best person that I could have had to handle my husband’s case. It was an extremely difficult case and I think most people would have given up, but not David. He knew exactly what to do and what contacts to use. He was kind, had an easy manner and made me feel at ease. He helped me every step of the way. Nothing was too much trouble. He was always polite and helpful. He also secured a very good settlement for me. I would recommend David to anyone in the same circumstances.”
